It’s Always Darkest Before the Dawn
Through her deeply personal story of childhood separation, adversity and forgiveness, Sharon shares her journey towards reclaiming her voice and recognising her worth.
For anyone who has ever felt alone, held back by their past or unsure how to move forward, Colourful Life offers a heartfelt reminder: another chapter is possible.
A story of courage, hope and the choice to keep going.
Written by Sharon L Bech

What happens when a little girl is separated from her parents, divided from her five siblings and placed into a welfare system filled with uncertainty?
How does she find a sense of belonging when she is moved between children’s homes and foster families, never knowing where she will be living next?
And after years of disappointment, anger and pain, how does she make the life-changing choice to forgive?
Colourful Life is Sharon L Bech’s honest, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful memoir.
It is the story of a little girl who faced separation, instability, abuse and repeated disappointment, yet found within herself the courage and determination to keep going.
More than a story about what happened to Sharon, Colourful Life is a story about what she eventually chose to do with everything that had happened
Sharon is only three when she and her five siblings are taken from their parents.
They are separated and placed into the unfamiliar and often unkind world of the welfare system.
Sharon must adjust to life in children’s homes and with foster families who do not always make her feel as though she belongs.
She is moved from one home to another, holding onto the dream that one day she will be reunited with her parents and siblings.
Then, just when it seems her luck may be changing, Sharon discovers her sister Debbie at her primary school.
The two sisters are joyfully reunited in the playground.
Soon afterwards, Sharon is reunited with another sister, Glenda. When their foster placement falls apart, two of the girls are finally allowed to return to live with their parents.

For Sharon, it feels like a dream coming true.
But the picture of a safe and happy family home is soon shattered.
Faced with abuse, instability and repeated disappointment, Sharon begins to feel as though she does not truly belong anywhere.
The lost and frightened little girl grows into a rebellious and resentful teenager who is still searching for love, safety and a place to call home.

A turning point comes when Sharon goes to live with her mother’s brother and his wife.
For the first time, she experiences the love and support of a nurturing family.
Through their care, Sharon begins learning that even when we cannot control what happens to us, we may still have choices about how we respond and how we move forward.
These lessons become an important foundation in Sharon’s life.
Years later, she is confronted with a painful truth and a life-defining choice:
Will she continue holding onto the anger and resentment she carries towards those who hurt her?
OR
Or will she begin the difficult journey towards forgiveness and freedom?
Colourful Life does not pretend that forgiveness is easy.
It does not dismiss the pain of Sharon’s experiences or excuse the actions of those who caused her harm.
Instead, it explores what can happen when we decide that the past will no longer control every part of our future.
Sharon’s story shows that forgiveness is not always about the other person.
Sometimes, it is about freeing ourselves from the weight of anger and resentment so that we can begin living differently.
At the heart of Colourful Life is the message Sharon now shares through The L.I.F.E. Movement:
No matter what life serves us, or the difficulties we face, we all have a choice.
Sharon wrote and published Colourful Life in 2015.
The book reached the Amazon bestseller list, and a producer even expressed interest in turning Sharon’s story into a movie.
From the outside, it appeared to be an extraordinary success.
But behind the scenes, Sharon was afraid.
Sharing her book meant sharing her truth.
It meant allowing people to see her pain, vulnerability and the experiences she had spent years trying to understand.
So the books remained packed away in a box beneath her bed.
They sat there collecting dust while Sharon found reasons not to launch them or speak openly about her story.
Even though the message in the book had helped Sharon overcome so much, fear was still holding her back.
Eventually, Sharon recognised that she was being invited to make another choice.
She could continue hiding, or she could take the book out from beneath the bed, honour her story and allow its message to reach the women who may need it.
Today, Sharon is choosing to be seen.
She is choosing to use her voice.
She is choosing to share Colourful Life not as a victim of her past, but as a woman rising into the next chapter of her life.

Today, Sharon shares this message through The L.I.F.E. Movement, her speaking and the meaningful spaces she is creating for women.
The book is where her story is told.
The movement is where the conversation continues.

For many years, my books remained hidden in a box beneath my bed.
I told myself I was not ready.
The truth was that I was afraid of being vulnerable, being judged and allowing people to see the real story behind the woman I had become.
Taking this book out from beneath my bed has been one of my own courageous steps.
I now understand that my story is not only about what happened to me.
It is about the choices I have made, the lessons I have learned and the future I am continuing to create.
If my story helps one woman feel seen, understand that she is not alone or believe that another chapter is possible, then sharing it has been worthwhile.
I hope Colourful Life reminds you that your voice matters, your story matters and your past does not have to decide what comes next.
With love,
Sharon Bech
